Wismar gets its first skybar: million-dollar project at the Old Harbor starts!

The Baltic Sea is tempting with new attractions, and an exciting project is now within reach: the first Skybar in Wismar. This unique sky lounge will be built above the roofs of the city and at the Old Harbor. On September 22nd, the UNESCO World Heritage Advisory Board gave the green light to the project, which has been in planning for almost a decade. The Wismar architectural firm Beck/Madaus designed the plans for the Skylounge, which is considered the region's architectural lighthouse.

The new premises cover a total area of 870 square meters, of which 390 square meters can be built on at the same time. The Skybar will offer space for a maximum of 200 covered seats and an inviting open-air area that invites you to linger even on sunny days. Mayor Thomas Beyer (SPD) emphasized that the approval of the project depends on a necessary adjustment to the development plan in the Old Port. The city administration is currently working on the relevant requirements.

A place for events

The Skylounge will offer space for small and medium-sized events and is designed for year-round use. The architectural features are also impressive: transparent facades, solar protection glazing and modern wind and weather protection elements in the outdoor area make the concept attractive. The bar will be easily accessible via stairs and an elevator, and barrier-free access is also planned.

The investors plan to invest around 1.2 million euros in the project. But it remains to be seen whether the opening can be implemented by 2027 as desired - implementation could take several months. “We hope that the Skylounge will not only revitalize the local gastronomy, but also attract large numbers of tourists,” said the mayor optimistically.

Wismar as a cultural hotspot

The development of the Skylounge fits wonderfully into the history and cultural heritage of Wismar. The city is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a long tradition as a Hanseatic city. The Hanseatic League, founded in the 12th century, was an influential trading network and gave Wismar and its surroundings significant economic and cultural impulses. Even today, the contribution to cultural identity is noticeable through projects like the Skylounge.

This is an exciting step into a new era for the Wismar team. The city's skyline will soon change, and the Skylounge could become a new attraction in addition to the historical backdrop, strengthening the Old Port of Wismar as a tourist and cultural center.

So the project has the potential to be a real hit if everything goes according to plan. It will be interesting to see how the next steps develop!
