Wismar is investing 264 million euros: the future of schools and culture is in danger!

There is a lot going on in Wismar! The citizens recently approved an ambitious investment plan worth around 264 million euros. These measures, which extend until 2042, are intended not only to improve the city's infrastructure, but also to increase the general quality of life for citizens. How NDR reported, the priority list was the subject of an important decision on September 26, 2025. A new focus is the renovation of another building at the Kurt Bürger Stadium, whose deficiencies can no longer be ignored.

With a total cost of 13.5 million euros, it is a significant measure to increase the attractiveness of the stadium. The new building for the Baltic Sea School also stands out from the investment catalog at 42.5 million euros, while the construction for the professional fire department and the public order office costs 41.5 million euros. Both projects have been classified as cannot be postponed, which means that a real good hand is required to move the developments forward quickly.

District music school faces major challenges

Meanwhile, the Carl Orff district music school at the Turnplatz in Wismar is under pressure. The location is threatened with closure from summer 2027 wismar.fm reported. Currently, over 700 students attend the facility, which is considered the cultural heart of the city. The parents' representative expresses concern about the planned move to a container facility in Wismar-Wendorf. The cost of this solution is at least 3 million euros, but many parents see this as an intolerable situation for their children's musical activities.

A very central point is the accessibility of the new location, which is a major problem, especially for younger, unaccompanied children. The criticism is loud because container construction not only offers less space, but also no special rooms for dance, theater and drums. This could lead to more parents having to rely on cars and families without a car being disadvantaged. Parents are also calling for a thorough examination of alternatives and an extension of the use of the current location. The discussion will continue until the district council meeting on October 15, 2025, meaning an exciting time for Wismar.

Focus on educational institutions

As part of the investments, the topic of educational institutions is always at the forefront. According to a study by PwC The need for financing for school properties is continually growing. The increasing need for school places since 2022/23 and the stable returns from investments in school properties make these projects attractive options for long-term investors. Especially in the social sector, educational properties are considered sustainable and socially important investments.

The course for the future has been set in Wismar and the surrounding area. Whether through renovation and new construction or through the discussion about the district music school - there is movement here! With a well-thought-out plan and committed citizen dialogue, some challenges could be overcome. It remains exciting to see how the situation in the city will develop further.
