Wismar is planning a major traffic turnaround: higher fees and fewer parking spaces!

Something is happening in terms of traffic in Wismar. The city is planning comprehensive traffic development planning that aims to improve traffic flow and optimize interaction between all road users. Experts took the time to collect data, analyze traffic flows and also collect citizens' opinions. The first package of measures has now been presented in the town hall. The aim is conflict-free traffic in the Hanseatic city.

A key proposal is to convert some intersections into roundabouts. Specifically, these are locations such as the Am Hafen/Schiffbauerdamm intersection, the high bridge at Dr.-Leber-Straße and Kanalstraße as well as Poeler Straße/Philosophenweg. In addition to optimizing flowing traffic, stationary traffic is also the focus of considerations.

Parking regulations and fees

A possible reduction in parking spaces is a hot topic, especially at the market square and the sand parking lot. In order to compensate for the lost spaces, the expansion of the parking garage is on the agenda. In addition, a clear reorganization of user groups is being sought: in the future, employees should be more likely to park outside the old town. However, this could involve higher costs for residents, as the current resident parking fee of 30 euros per year could become more expensive.

The city is also discussing introducing higher parking fees to better manage traffic looking for parking. A modern parking management system is also being considered. Cyclists don't miss out in Wismar either, because cycling is very important here - 28% of road users are cyclists. Proposals to expand cycle streets on important routes and to provide additional cycle racks and cycle rental stations are therefore also on the list.

Public transport and city logistics

Another aspect that should not be neglected is local public transport. There is still room for improvement here, especially when it comes to timing and accessibility. In order to relieve the old town of delivery traffic, those responsible are thinking about the idea of a city logistics system. This package of measures will be further specified in the coming weeks before the citizens vote on the traffic development plan next March. This plan will last for a period of 10 to 15 years.

The citizens of Wismar can be excited to see what changes await them and what the traffic situation will be like in the long term. With a good hand and forward-looking decisions, Wismar could soon become a model city for modern traffic management.
