Wismar says goodbye: Disney Adventure begins its journey!

On Monday evening, September 3rd, 2025, the cruise ship “Disney Adventure” said goodbye to the Hanseatic city of Wismar. This happened under the critical eyes of both locals and tourists who watched the spectacle at the harbor. The ship, which was 342 meters long and 46 meters wide, had an impressive capacity of 6,700 passengers and 2,500 crew members on 19 decks. But before it could continue its journey, it had to leave with empty tanks because the shipping channel to the Baltic Sea is only 9.50 meters deep reports fuw.ch.

The newly built ship's first stop took it to the port of Mukran on the island of Rügen to store water and fuel there. The departure date had to be adjusted several times; the start was originally planned for Saturday, then for Sunday and finally the departure took place on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The ship's horn sounded three times and tugs accompanied the magnificent cruise ship on its way reports the NDR.

An unloved legacy

This farewell is also the end of an era for the shipyard industry in Wismar, which has been going on since 1946. The story ranges from a Red Army ship repair plant to well-known shipyards such as VEB Mathias-Thesen-Werft, Aker MTW and MV Werften. Fate was not kind to the latter: After bankruptcy and difficulties in the corona pandemic, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) became the new owner of the Wismar shipyards in 2022 and took over the shipbuilding chapter in the region this is what fuw.ch reports.

Preparations for the “Disney Adventure” began in March 2018, but as is so often the case, there were delays caused not only by the pandemic, but also by the insolvency of MV Werften. In particular, the additions to the ship have not yet been fully assembled in order to keep the weight and draft low. Although the ship was originally designed for 9,500 passengers and 2,000 crew members, it is now used for multi-day trips in the Far East reports NDR.

Perspectives for the future

With the discontinuation of the “Disney Adventure”, Wismar will not be left without shipbuilding. TKMS plans to build submarines and possibly frigates in Wismar from 2027. Overall, the maritime industry in Germany is viewed as an important economic sector with around 75 billion euros in sales per year and around 400,000 workers. The maritime economy, including Wismar, is closely linked to shipping, shipbuilding and the supply industry as Wikipedia explains.

The future in Wismar may be promising despite the loss of the “Disney Adventure”; It remains to be seen how the shipyard industry will develop further. But one thing is certain: saying goodbye to the big cruise ship touched the hearts of many residents and the memories of a turbulent time in Wismar will remain.
