Drunk driver flees after accident with Harley – shock in Moeckowberg!
On Wednesday evening, June 26, 2025, a serious accident occurred at the Moeckowberg intersection (B 109 / B 111), which represented a moment of shock not only for those involved, but also for witnesses. A 25-year-old man was driving a VW Golf towards Greifswald when he ignored a red light and collided with a 34-year-old motorcyclist who was riding his Harley-Davidson towards Wolgast. The impact caused the motorcyclist to fall and had to be taken to hospital with minor injuries, the Ostsee-Zeitung reported.
But that wasn't the end of the story. The driver continued his journey despite the vehicle being obviously damaged - his bumper had fallen off and a flat tire. An attentive witness followed the fleeing driver and informed the police, who were able to stop the VW Golf shortly afterwards. During the check it turned out that the driver was heavily intoxicated: a breath alcohol test showed 1.78 per mille. In Germany there is an alcohol limit of 0.5 per mille. From 1.1 per mille someone is absolutely unfit to drive; The man now has to answer for negligent bodily harm, endangering road traffic and hit-and-run. The total property damage is estimated at around 33,000 euros, which further illustrates the extent of the incident.
Drunk driving: an expensive outcome
Driving under the influence of alcohol is not only dangerous, but also expensive. According to the ADAC, around 18,884 people were involved in alcohol-related traffic accidents in Germany in 2023; 198 of them lost their lives. These numbers illustrate the enormous responsibility that every driver bears. The ability to concentrate decreases from a blood alcohol level of 0.2, which can lead to dangerous decisions even in harmless situations. From a value of 1.5 per mille, the risk of a so-called “film tear” increases. This can lead to you no longer being clear about what you are doing - a highly risky situation in traffic.
A film tear often occurs as a result of excessive drinking and is sometimes used as an excuse to minimize one's own responsibility. In such a condition, mental and motor performance can be severely impaired, which is life-threatening when driving. The legal situation regarding drunk driving is clear: from just 0.3 per mille there is a risk of fines or imprisonment as well as points in Flensburg and the revocation of the driving license, as explained on führerscheine.de.
Prevention and responsibility
The sad result of accidents like this should encourage all road users to take more responsibility. Avoiding alcohol can save lives – both your own and those of others. There are no miracle cures to speed up the elimination of alcohol, and the effects of alcohol vary from person to person. Everyone is responsible for their own decisions, and no one should risk the lives of others for a moment of carelessness.
Incidents like this one on Wednesday evening in Moeckowberg make it impressively clear: a happy, wet evening should never come at the expense of road safety. Let us all take the wheel – at any time and in any condition.
