Free bicycle coding in Greifswald and Wolgast – grab it now!

An attractive offer for the safety of bicycles and e-bikes will be made available in northern Germany on Thursday, September 4th, 2025. The police in Greifswald and Wolgast invite all cyclists to have their bikes coded free of charge. This event takes place in Greifswald on the market square from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in Wolgast at the EGN hardware store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A great opportunity to increase your own safety and that of your bikes!

Anyone who takes the time to have their bike coded on this day can expect a memorable code on the frame that makes the bike unique. Coding is particularly effective at deterring would-be thieves and making stolen bikes harder to pass on. Such a code can be in the form of an engraving or a sticker, and usually represents a significantly higher chance of recovering the stolen property.

What needs to be taken into account when coding?

No pre-registration is required to take part in the coding event, although you should bring a few things with you. This includes an identity card and proof of ownership. If the bike is an e-bike or Pedelec, the battery key is also required. Coding takes about 15 minutes and not only offers security, but also gives you a good feeling knowing that the bike is protected in the best possible way.

The coding itself is carried out using an encrypted, personalized code that contains the owner's details. The code begins with the license plate number, followed by other important information to guarantee the identity of the owner. This measure is particularly important because around 300,000 bicycles are stolen in Germany every year. It's worth taking extra safety precautions, such as sturdy locks and securing the bike to solid objects. The ADAC emphasizes that pedelecs and e-bikes require special protection because they often have a higher value.

The advantages of bicycle coding

Coding offers numerous advantages, not just in deterring thieves. It enables police and lost property offices to quickly trace stolen bicycles back to the owner. With a clearly visible code, stolen bikes are much more likely to be recovered. When selling coded bicycles, the coding should also be recorded in the purchase contract so that the new owner is informed about the additional security aspect.

Overall, free bike coding is a great opportunity to increase the security of your own bikes. So we can only advise you to take advantage of this offer and get your bike ready for the next cycling season. More information can be found on the local police websites or at Tagesschau and ADAC.
