New fleet service boat for the Navy: Peene shipyard starts major project!

A new milestone in Germany's naval history was recently set: today a 130 meter long section for a new fleet service boat was towed from the Peene shipyard in Wolgast to Lemwerder in Lower Saxony. This reports NDR. The hull section is now being completed at the renowned Lürssen shipyard in Lemwerder, marking the first step for the new Class 424 fleet service boats.

The symbolic start of shipbuilding took place in February 2025, when the reconnaissance ship was laid down. A total of three of these modern fleet service boats are to be put into service by 2029 to replace the old models that have been in use for over 30 years. Ultimately, in today's tense security situation in the Baltic Sea, it is essential to use the latest technology to ensure maritime security.

Modern technology for the navy

These new fleet service boats will be equipped with advanced electronic sensors that enable comprehensive reconnaissance and surveillance at sea. How Picture Reportedly, the ships have the ability to operate for up to a year without a port call. They are also equipped with a helipad and the option to take drones on board.

With a construction contract worth several billion euros, the Lürssen Group in Bremen is commissioned to build the ships. The construction effort not only secures numerous jobs: several northern German shipyards are also involved, including the Peene shipyard in Wolgast, where the first section of the forecastle is being manufactured.

Important missions in the future

Lieutenant General Andreas Hoppe emphasizes the urgency of these new construction projects and emphasizes their importance in view of the worsening situation in the Baltic Sea. Each fleet service boat is manned by approximately 100 soldiers, including both Navy sailors and cyber and information space specialists. This ensures that the use of the new ships not only meets the navy's conventional requirements, but also the challenges of digital warfare.

The new reconnaissance aircraft will replace the older OSTE-class units, representing a significant renewal for the German Navy. With the successful progress of this project, Germany is showing that it has a good knack for innovative and strategic solutions in defense policy. At a time when security on the world's oceans is more important than ever, this billion-dollar arms contract will provide employees not only at the Peene shipyard, but at many northern German shipyards with work for the coming years and thus make an important contribution to the stability of maritime security.
