Pomeranian Cog Ucra back in port: Next season is ready!
In Ueckermünde, the Pommernkogge Ucra is ready for the next season after a month-long stay in the shipyard. The historic ship has taken its rightful place directly at the Old Bollwerk, right next to the tourist information center. The stay in the shipyard in Wolgast, which according to [nordkurier] is necessary every three years, began on September 29th and served to protect and maintain the lower ship.
The dedicated club members carried out the maintenance work themselves. Modern tools such as a Kärcher were used to thoroughly clean the cog. To safely ward off algae and mussels, the underwater hull received three layers of anti-fouling paint and a fresh coat of paint for the upper water hull. Fortunately, no critical defects were found during the subsequent safety check by the inspectors.
Full steam ahead into the new season
The 2025 season is promising: The Ucra will be able to offer trips on both the Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Last season, which ended on September 24th, the club's members were proud of 80 trips and 20 excursions, which particularly attracted school classes from Torgelow, Eggesin, Ueckermünde, Ferdinandshof and Görlitz. The cog becomes a real shared experience for young and old sailors.
The club's financial resources are generated through these trips with locals and tourists as well as through participation in events such as the Hanse Sail. The ship is not only a popular excursion destination, but also part of the region's cultural heritage. The Ucra itself is a reconstruction of a medieval Baltic Sea cog that was built in Torgelow in 2001 and has been in full operation since 2020. It belongs to the city of Torgelow and combines tradition with modern driving fun.
A ship with history
The local club shows great commitment and a good hand in caring for the cog. The fact that the Ucra is in such good shape is not least due to the active commitment of the club members, who carry out the manual work themselves. This keeps all parts of the ship in top condition and ready for the next trip. Ship safety is a top priority: engines, navigation instruments and all fire protection are checked annually. This shows how seriously responsibility for historical heritage is taken.
With such a fresh coat of paint and extensive maintenance work, the Ucra is well prepared to offer exciting experiences on the water next season. We can't wait to see what adventures await the cog in the 2026 season!
