Tragic men's day: two dead after misfortune in Wolgast!

A tragic incident overshadows the celebrations for the men's day in Wolgast. On May 29, a 27-year-old Angler, Dennis, fell into the harbor basin at the Peenbrücke shortly before midnight and could not free himself. A randomly passing group noticed the incident and a 40-year-old spontaneously jumped into the water to help. Unfortunately, he also got under water, and both men finally fell victim to a tragic misfortune. After a large -scale search, in which, among other things, a rescue helicopter and thermal drones were used, the lifeless bodies of both men were recovered from the water after over two hours. An emergency doctor could only determine death.

The emotions are running up in the community, because both Dennis and the 40-year-old leave relatives who are now lagging behind in great grief. The mother of the deceased, who works in the administration of the office on the Peenestrom, and employees of the Volgaster town hall have therefore already launched several fundraisers in order to support the families financially in this difficult time. In particular, the high funeral costs are a great burden. After his death, Dennis is to be buried alongside his father in Ahlbeck, who died three years ago. So far, over 1800 euros have been raised for the fundraising campaign, and many donors are former classmates from Dennis.

Marie Horstmann, the girlfriend of the 27-year-old, also started a fundraising campaign to support the family as best as possible. A fundraising campaign was also set up for the son of the 40-year-old. These actions are available on the Gofundme platform:

Overview of drowning accidents

The German Life Rettungs Society (DLRG) warns that such tragic incidents are unfortunately not isolated cases. In 2023, the DLRG recorded at least 411 fatal accidents in waters in Germany, which means an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. It is particularly worrying that this was found for the third time in a row to increase the drowned. DLRG President Ute Vogt hopes that these numbers will sensitize people to the dangers in waters and are planning special information campaigns in the coming months.

Now it is particularly important to bring the community together and support those affected. The tragedy of this accident does not leave anyone untouched and reminds us of how important it is to take care of each other - both in everyday life and in dangerous situations on the water. The fire brigade and the rescue workers work tirelessly to prevent such incidents, but the responsibility is also with each individual.
