Alarm-Nannys: Innovative childcare for fire brigade parents in valley!

In a remarkable step to support fire brigade families, the Valley volunteer fire brigade has launched an innovative concept for childcare. The so-called "alarm nannys" become active for this purpose during the operations by firefighters. This became known on June 14, 2025, while Prime Minister Stephan Weil expressed his recognition for the project in a video message. At the award ceremony of the Lower Saxony volunteer award in Hanover, the Talger Alarm-Nannys was presented with the award, which underlined the increased interest in this initiative. The concept stipulates that firefighters can take their children to missions, with the alarm nannies taking care of the care. These committed people come from the fire brigade and are trained accordingly. The supervisors are able to organize their missions through a special app. In this way you can give feedback and receive information as to whether children who come into their care are also brought to the fire station. Firefighter Jasmin Schmidt-Frerichs emphasizes the positive experiences that could be collected in both the parents and the children.

award and recognition

The Lower Saxony State Fire Brigade Association praised the concept as exemplary. The high women's quota in the volunteer fire brigade, which is around 30 %, shows that women play an important role within the fire brigade, which is generally the case in Lower Saxony: the proportion of women here is almost 15 %. The fact that the alarm nannys have now been awarded the Lower Saxony volunteer award is another step towards visibility and appreciation of their work. When receiving the award ceremony, it was demonstrated how the alarm is going on via the app - a consistently positive experience for the guests. During the event, the Talger fire brigade was actually alerted into a building fire in Bersenbrück, and the live processes gave a unique insight into the functionality of the project.

a win for everyone involved

This innovative care offer makes it easier to continue to take advantage of operations, while the safety and maintenance of your children are guaranteed. Even the non-operational members of the fire brigade, for example due to pregnancy, will find support in the Alarm-Nannys project. This special form of childcare not only ensures smooth operational readiness, but also strengthens the community spirit within the fire brigade.

The project of the alarm nannys in the valley impressively shows how a good hand in the organization and a well thought-out strategy can help promote the compatibility of family and work in such a responsible volunteering as the fire brigade. It remains to be hoped that other fire brigades will create similar concepts and thus contribute to strengthening volunteering.
