Alarm Nannies: Innovative child care for firefighter parents in Talge!

In a remarkable step to support firefighter families, the Talge Volunteer Fire Department has launched an innovative childcare concept. The so-called “alarm nannies” are active for this purpose during firefighters’ operations. This became known on June 14, 2025, while Prime Minister Stephan Weil expressed his appreciation for the project in a video message. At the award ceremony for the Lower Saxony Volunteering Award in Hanover, the Talger Alarm nannies were presented with the award, which underlined the increased interest in this initiative. NDR reports that ...

The concept allows firefighters to take their children with them on missions, with the alarm nannies taking care of them. These committed people come from the fire service environment and are trained accordingly. The supervisors are able to organize their assignments using a special app. This allows them to give feedback and receive information as to whether children who come into their care are also taken to the fire station. Firefighter Jasmin Schmidt-Frerichs emphasizes the positive experiences that both parents and children had.

Award and recognition

The Lower Saxony State Fire Brigade Association praised the concept as exemplary. The high proportion of women in the Talge volunteer fire department, which is around 30%, shows that women play an important role within the fire department, which is generally the case in Lower Saxony: Here the proportion of women is just under 15%. The fact that the alarm nannies have now been awarded the Lower Saxony volunteer award is a further step towards the visibility and appreciation of their work. At the awards ceremony reception, it was demonstrated how the alarm is sent via the app - a thoroughly positive experience for the guests. During the event, the Talger fire department was actually alerted to a building fire in Bersenbrück, and the processes experienced live gave a unique insight into the functionality of the project.

A win for everyone involved

This innovative care offering makes it easier for firefighter parents to continue to actively participate in operations while ensuring the safety and entertainment of their children. Even members of the fire brigade who are not fit for duty, for example due to pregnancy, find support in the alarm nannies project. This special form of childcare not only ensures smooth operational readiness, but also strengthens the community spirit within the fire department.

The alarm nannies project in Talge impressively shows how a good hand in organization and a well-thought-out strategy can help promote the compatibility of family and work in a volunteer position as responsible as the fire department. It remains to be hoped that other fire departments will launch similar concepts and thus contribute to strengthening voluntary work.
