Alarm mood in Lower Saxony: Skilled labor shortage is worsening dramatically!

That doesn't work at all! There is a sense of alarm in Lower Saxony because of the urgent shortage of skilled workers. As the IHK Lower Saxony shows in its current survey, only 56% of the over 1,500 companies surveyed were able to fill all training positions in 2024. This is an alarming signal for many companies. Large, attractive companies in particular are increasingly having to contend with empty application folders. A third of the companies stated that they did not receive any applications for their vacant positions.

What is particularly worrying is that 72.6% of companies note that the applications they receive often do not meet the requirements. Deficits in the areas of expression, math skills, resilience, discipline and mental performance are at the top of the list. Another result of the survey: 87.2% of companies regularly notice deficiencies in the maturity of their trainees.

Early career guidance is required

The IHK calls for starting in schools to improve career orientation. Schools must strengthen the foundations of vocational training and ensure that potential trainees are better prepared for the demands of the labor market. Companies are also calling for an improvement in the framework conditions for training, particularly by strengthening vocational schools.

A particularly blatant example of the situation is the hospice in Syke, where ten full-time positions remain unfilled. This means that families from other federal states do not receive adequate care. It also shows that some sectors, such as the catering industry, the construction industry and retail, are particularly affected by this problem.

There is an imbalance in training positions and those seeking them

The whole thing is not only a problem for companies, but also affects future skilled workers and the entire economy in Lower Saxony. Who would have thought that the companies that offer the most training places would not receive any applications? There is a need for action here.
