Aurich weekly market: no fee causes mixed reactions!

The city council of Aurich has decided to waive stand fees and electricity costs for traders at the weekly market retroactively from September 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026. This significant decision came at a time when the Aurich weekly market is struggling with various challenges, including a decline in regional production and increasing competition from supermarkets and online retail. The aim of this measure is to increase the diversity and attractiveness of the market and to promote it as an important meeting place for citizens. This is reported by the District newspaper.

Although there is positive feedback from retailers and customers, some groups in the city council expressed skepticism about the fee waiver. Gunnar Ott from the Greens has repeatedly pointed out the need for an increased presence on social media to increase the visibility of the weekly market. The city has already launched appropriate public relations and campaigns to increase the attractiveness of the market for the population. During the Christmas season, the weekly market will be moved to the town hall square, although traders will continue to be free of charge.

Comparison of fee models

NWZ-Online reports that the city of Aurich is foregoing revenue of around 22,000 euros per year in the hope of being able to offer a greater variety and more offers for customers.

The current fee structure in Aurich stipulates that traders for fixed stands pay 0.42 euros per square meter per day, while traveling traders have to pay at least 8 euros. In comparison, fees in other cities are often higher and are based on either flat rates or detailed bylaw structures. In Emden, for example, the basic fee is 5 euros per market day and 0.35 euros per square meter of stand space. These differences show that the fee waiver in Aurich represents a welcome relief for market suppliers.

Looking into the future

Before the measure in Aurich ends, an assessment will be carried out to decide on a possible continuation of the fee waiver. Issues such as parking space and the marketing of the weekly market remain crucial for the future. The city council has announced that it will inform citizens about the changes through signs and various information channels. Discussions about the future of the Aurich market are in full swing and the topic remains exciting, as many hope that local shopping and support for regional retailers will continue to develop positively.
