Funeral ship MS Aegir” stranded off Juist – passenger rescue started!
Today, December 6, 2025, an incident off the North Sea island of Juist is causing a stir. The funeral ship “MS Aegir”, which is used to carry out burials at sea, ran aground on the “Kalfarmer” sandbank. The water police in Emden have recorded the situation and reported that around 12 p.m. today the crew of the ship reported that it was unable to maneuver. It remains unclear whether the “MS Aegir” was traveling to a funeral or not.
The German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) was quickly on the scene and successfully evacuated eight passengers from the funeral ship, while two people, including the captain, had to remain on board. The “MS Aegir” received support from the express ferry “Inselexpress 2”, which initially tried to tow the ship, but without success.
The hope for a quick rescue now lies in the next flood, which is expected around midnight. In the meantime, the two crew members are on board the ship to wait until the tide brings the necessary rise in water to tow the ship free. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far, which makes the situation somewhat easier.
Sea burials and their place in the region
Sea burials, such as those carried out on the “MS Aegir”, are very popular in the region. This form of ashes burial is offered by a wide variety of providers, including Janssen Seebestattungen. They are characterized by an individual, personal design of the ceremonies that are not standardized. Relatives have the opportunity to visit the exact location of the burial as the coordinates are documented. This offers a special opportunity to remember the deceased.
Burials at sea often represent a cost-effective alternative to traditional burial sites as there are no long-term costs for grave maintenance. In the region around the North Sea, this offer is always highly valued, which is reflected in the strong demand.
The incidents surrounding the “MS Aegir”, however, remind us that unforeseen events can occur even with such sensitive issues as the funeral. We will be curious to see how the situation develops and whether the ship will soon be able to sail again.
