Christa Berssen: 100th volunteer at the Malteser relief service in Friesoythe!

Christa Berssen has chosen a new path in life. After retiring a year ago as a teacher at the Laurentius-Siemer-Gymnasium in Friesoythe, she now finds fulfillment in Maltese Relief Service. She is the 100th volunteer of the service, which was founded 25 years ago and is now an important institution in the region.

Her commitment is particularly noteworthy because Christa has decided to begin the “major grief training” at the Maltese Academy. She would like to specialize in bereavement support for adults as part of the outpatient hospice service. Personal experiences with loss in the family motivated her to openly address the sensitive topic of dying and grief. City representative Gerd Dumstorff and department manager Marlen Schmidt recognize their commitment and its importance for the community.

A piece of grief support

The Maltesers not only offer grief support in Friesoythe, but are also still looking for volunteers who would like to get involved in hospice and grief work. This also includes special initiatives such as the “mobile shopping cart” and rickshaw trips, which can enrich the everyday lives of many people. So there are many opportunities to get involved and do good.

Special events are also planned as part of an upcoming silver jubilee in January 2026, including a ceremony and a photo exhibition to mark the last 25 years of the Maltese relief service.
