MTV Aurich: Triathletes conquer heat battle at Ironman Frankfurt!

The triathletes experienced a real heat battle at this year's Ironman Frankfurt, which also hosted the European Long Distance Championships. Among the athletes were three MTV Aurich participants: Klaus Peter Dworak, Sven Kuhlmann and Holger Onkes. Leon Onkes and Dworak started with experience in long-distance races, while Kuhlmann took on his first big challenge of this kind. The starting signal was given early at 6:40 a.m. at Langener Waldsee, where the water was so warm at over 24.5 degrees that wetsuits were not allowed, which gave the event an additional challenge. Loud NWZonline Kuhlmann left the water as the fastest after an impressive 1:23 hours.

The subsequent cycling course led through the city center of Frankfurt and the picturesque Wetterau, where the athletes had to overcome both inclines and rapid descents. The heat was already noticeable in the morning and it became clear that the participants had to consistently implement their drinking and nutrition strategies. Dworak had an unpleasant experience while cycling when he lost his water bottle containing carbohydrates. Luckily, his teammate Onkes helped out by giving him food. After about 5 hours and 30 minutes, Dworak and Onkes finally set off on the running route, while Kuhlmann completed the cycling route a little later after 6 hours and 15 minutes.

The challenges of the marathon

The marathon, a route of four laps of 10.5 km each along the Main, presented the athletes with further challenges. The heat was getting to Dworak, so he asked Onkes to continue walking alone. Ultimately, however, he stuck with his teammate. In an impressive finale, Dworak and Onkes crossed the finish line after 12 hours and 5 minutes, while Kuhlmann finished after 13 hours and 50 minutes and hit a low point at kilometer 20 but did not allow himself to be discouraged. “This shows how important mental strength is in such extreme competitions,” says Dworak, reflecting on the experiences he will take with him from the race.

Weather conditions had changed significantly from the perfect temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees in the elite class, where notable athletes finished in under seven hours and 40 minutes, such as BestTriathletes reported. Against this background, the performance of the Aurich athletes shows that preparation and perseverance are crucial. A point that is important in triathlon season planning, as highlighted in the article by Holger Lüning, plays a central role.

Successful participation in the Ironman Frankfurt is not only a personal triumph for Kuhlmann, Dworak and Onkes, but also a sign of the passion and tireless fighting spirit of the triathletes from Aurich. These competitions are not just sporting events, but true tests of physical and psychological strength.
