Bäcker Steinecke in Braunschweig: only allowed card payment!

The Steinecke bakery in Braunschweig causes excitement among its customers: Since July 1, 2025, the popular branch on Schleinitzstrasse has no longer accepted cash. This makes it one of only four nationwide that tests this cashless payment system. The changeover could be particularly important for the many students at the nearby TU Braunschweig. The location is well frequented and known for its delicious baked goods.

Now it's called "Bye-bye cash, hello card"-so it is on the signs that the customers indicate the new payment method. For purchasing, you can only pay with an EC card, credit card or smartphone. In order to facilitate the change for customers, Steinecke also offers a rechargeable credit card without saving personal data. This card is particularly well received because it enables discounts and offers additional flexibility.

test run with foresight

The test run should take at least four weeks to check the acceptance of cashless payments. "We want to find out how well our customers can get along with this new form of paying," explains a spokesman for the bakery. The aim is to make the processes at the cash register simpler and faster, especially during the evening billing. But customers' feedback are crucial. Some time ago, the Göing bakery in Hanover had already tested a similar concept, but had come across customer requests and then switched to cash payments again.

The Steinecke bakery belongs to the group of large bakeries with more than 500 branches in East and northern Germany. In addition to the location in Braunschweig, branches in Berlin, Leipzig and Hanover also take part in the test. In the popularity of the company at the students, they hope for positive feedback and an increased interest in cashless payments that are also increasingly trendy in Germany.

cashless payment in the trend

The numbers speak a clear language: In 2023, incoming payments of 63.6 trillion euros were implemented in Germany. This shows that cashless payment is very popular in this country. The inconceivable payment transactions have grown strongly within the EU, and card payments, both with debit and credit cards, are becoming increasingly popular. The number of debit cards issued rose to around 143.3 million by the end of 2023.

This trend towards cashless payment methods is also recognized by many companies. Especially in the catering and in retail, payment by card is increasingly in demand and the experience at the cash register is to be optimized. With the changeover, Steinecke could hit the nerve of the time - remain the way to the series of cashless payments?

How the test at Steinecke ultimately fails remains to be seen exciting. The results after the test run will show whether the company has proven a good hand.

In the meantime, the community is looking forward to the feedback from the bakery customers-and maybe other branches in Germany will soon be ready to take this step.
