CDU headquarters in Göttingen: activists build protest wall!

There is currently a very special spectacle on the stage of political conflict in Göttingen: suspected activists have quickly built a wall in front of the entrance to the local CDU headquarters. A wall that is around one and a half meters high and was very easy to tear down thanks to the fresh mortar. On this symbolic barrier there are banners reading: “Closed because of your warmongering and racist isolationist policies.” This somewhat unusual protest has caused quite a stir and is causing a stir in the city. NDR reports on the reactions and the consequences of the incident.

Fritz Güntzler, a member of the Bundestag and CDU district chairman, has made it clear how horrified he is by the situation. He condemns this act and sees it as a worrying development in political culture. The state security agency is currently investigating coercion and property damage, although this wall is not the first time that the CDU headquarters in Göttingen has been the target of protests. The building was attacked with paint bags back in February.

Historical review: The construction of the wall

Given recent events, one might ponder the symbolism of walls in history. The construction of the Wall in Berlin, which began on August 13, 1961, is a striking example. At that time, around 10,000 people's and border police did everything they could to divide the city and seal off the GDR from the Federal Republic. All sector crossings were closed except for 13 checkpoints. This radical closure was a well-guarded state secret of the GDR government, as the Federal Archives shows.

The reactions were international and shocking. Chancellor Konrad Adenauer called the closure a breach of the four-power agreement and described the GDR regime as a “tyranny.” Willy Brandt, then Governing Mayor of Berlin, called for the United Nations to intervene. These political reactions show how much the construction of the wall heated up tempers and further fueled the Cold War.

A piece of history that remains

The Berlin Wall stood for over 28 years and became a symbol of division and the conflicts of the Cold War. Historians estimate the number of Wall victims to be between 125 and 206, highlighting the cruel reality behind this political barrier. This review of the construction of the Wall, supported by the Bundestag documents, shows that walls are not only made of concrete, but also of the stories and fates of the people who influence them.

It remains to be seen whether the current wall in front of the CDU headquarters in Göttingen will also write a new history in the political landscape. One thing is certain: the topic will probably remain discussed for a long time.
