The police were originally looking for the BMW, which had previously fled from the A2. When they arrived, the emergency services found the two seriously and life-threatening people in the VW as well as the three dead people in the water. The officers came across some strange details: The occupants of the BMW had burglary tools with them and wore stockings over their hands to cover up possible traces. It is currently unclear whether they had actually broken into a building before or whether they were planning a break-in. The bodies of the men involved in the accident have not yet been autopsied because the cause of death was not of criminal interest in the investigation. They were released for burial.
