Eintracht Braunschweig on the hunt for a coach: Is Heiner Backhaus coming?
There was once a lot of excitement around Eintracht Braunschweig - and after the disappointing relegation, the club is now looking for a new coach. After the 1:4 defeat against 1. FC Nürnberg they were forced to dismiss coach Daniel Scherning. The decision was not easy, as sports director Benjamin Kessel emphasized, as the team's conviction was lost after two defeats in a row. Scherning, who stepped in in November 2023 when Eintracht was in last place in the table, was unable to get off to a good start into the new season despite successfully staying in the league.
Interim coach Marc Pfitzner will take the reins for the upcoming relegation games. He receives support from assistant coach Marcel Goslar, athletic trainer Janning Michels and rehabilitation trainer Alexander Bülow, while Ken Reichel and Jasmin Fejzic strengthen the coaching team. The relegation will take place on Friday and Tuesday at 8:30 p.m., with the first leg taking place in Saarbrücken.
Heiner Backhaus in focus
The club management has already started the search for a new head coach. Heiner Backhaus from Alemannia Aachen is considered a hot candidate for the successor. The 43-year-old has consistently performed well in the regional league and in the current 3rd league season and has been observed by various clubs on several occasions. The first reports of interest in Backhaus emerged on June 11th. The coach still has a contract with Alemannia Aachen until 2027, but a transfer fee is under discussion between the clubs. Alemannia boss Ralf Bündgen said that Backhaus's departure would be surprising and that they plan to continue with him for the time being.
Given the current situation, the coach himself has indicated that he is satisfied with his path at the club so far. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether he would like to take on a new challenge. In the last few days, the media reported that Alemannia Aachen is processing numerous inquiries from other coaching candidates, including squad planner Erdal Celik, who has already received 70 inquiries.
Eintracht Braunschweig's future
So the challenges are great. Eintracht Braunschweig not only wants to stay in the league next season, but also strive for cultural and purposeful development. This requires a clear course on the trainer issue. Even if the Backhaus case is currently the focus, Eintracht will have to examine further options in order to achieve their future goals. It will be crucial to get someone behind the wheel who can both motivate the team and refine the game philosophy.
The coming time will show whether Backhaus will be the coach of choice and whether Eintracht Braunschweig can set the course for a successful future. There is only one thing left for the fans to hope: that the new coach has a good hand and will lead the team to new heights again.
