Traditional Oettinger brewery in Braunschweig closes: 140 jobs affected!
In a bitter decision for the Braunschweig economy, the Oettinger brewery will close its doors at the end of 2025. How NDR reports, the traditional business, which was once known as the Feldschlösschen brewery, will be converted into a purely logistical location. There are many reasons for this decision: declining beer sales and outdated technology are causing problems for the company. Over the past few years, the beer market in Germany has come under increasing pressure, which has now resulted in the closure of the brewery.
140 employees are now receiving the frightening news: they received letters of termination just in time for Christmas. According to a social plan set by the Oettinger Group, employees can move to a transfer company in January 2026 and receive compensation payments there Food Practice supplemented. Only around ten employees will remain at the location in order to be able to handle parts of the logistics and materials management.
The pressure on the brewing industry is increasing
Oettinger is not the only one struggling with these challenges. Between 2019 and 2023, 60 German breweries have already ceased operations drinks news report. The reasons for this include overcapacity, a lack of profitability and a cost explosion, which became clear after the pandemic. The beer market, with a volume of around 83.76 million hectoliters, is facing a market shakeout that is necessary, but also carries the risk of losing a lot of the regional brewing culture.
These developments clearly show that the pressure on breweries is growing. Many companies are thinking about leaving the market because they lack prospects and liquidity. Even large breweries such as the Oettinger Group and the Krombacher Brewery have recognized the need for restructuring. A circumstance that makes it difficult for those who want to stay on the market to develop new products and attractive offers.
Trade unionist Alexander Nimptsch criticizes this closure as a “cold-hearted end” to a traditional company that also loses part of its regional identity with the closure. Now it remains to be seen how the affected employees will shape their new lives and what consequences the closure will have for the Braunschweig location.
