VfB Stuttgart fights its way through the cup: a roller coaster ride full of goals!

VfB Stuttgart successfully defended its title in an exciting DFB Cup match. Despite a dramatic encounter against Eintracht Braunschweig, which ended in a penalty shootout, the team led by coach Sebastian Hoeneß prevailed 8:7. Nick Woltemade, who contributed five goals to the cup win last season, had to watch from the bench that evening while Tiago Tomás and Lorenz Assignon played their first games in the VfB starting eleven. A total of 20,865 spectators in the Eintracht Stadium were able to watch an exciting game that ended 4-4 after regular time and extra time.

The game started brilliantly when Sven Köhler gave Braunschweig a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute. But Ermedin Demirovic didn't let Stuttgart tremble for long and equalized in the 12th minute. Stuttgart then took control and took the lead again in the second half through Demirovic in the 60th minute. But Eintracht fought courageously and managed to fall behind thanks to Fabio Di Michele Sanchez, who scored two goals in the 77th and 85th minutes. Woltemade showed his class in the 89th minute and secured the decisive equalizer.

Memorable decisions in the penalty shootout

In the second half of extra time, an own goal from Sanoussy Ba in the 92nd minute ensured that Stuttgart took the lead again. But the joy was short-lived as Christian Joe Conteh equalized for Braunschweig again in the 105th minute, which made the story of the game even more exciting.

The final decisions were ultimately made on penalties. Stuttgart had difficulties at times: Dan-Axel Zagadou and Chema missed their attempts, but the strong Alexander Nübel defused several penalties from Johan Gomez and Max Marie. Finally, Lorenz Assignon converted the decisive penalty and thus secured a place in the next round of the DFB Cup.

Bad luck with injuries in Stuttgart too

Despite the victory, VfB has some bad luck with injuries. In addition to Woltemade, Luca Jaquez, Jeff Chabot, Leonidas Stergiou and Ameen Al-Dakhil were also not in top form. The need for reinforcements in defense is noticeable, as the team was already struggling with personnel shortages even before the season really got going.

While VfB Stuttgart now moves into the next round of the DFB Cup, the team will have to face the challenges of the coming games. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops with the injured players and who will be on the pitch in the following games. Ran and the DFB keep us updated on developments.
