Bicycle underpass in Klein Hehlen: Now safely through the winter!

The winter challenges for cyclists are well known in northern Germany. Recently the bicycle underpass in Klein Hehlen, Celle, had to be closed due to the risk of black ice. This led to unpleasant detours for many cyclists, which surprised the local mayor Karin Abenhausen. She expressed the wish for such measures to be announced early in order to make planning easier for cyclists. How Celle newspaper Reportedly, there were always dangerous situations in the winter months because the water could not drain away optimally and black ice formed.

In order to make cycling safer in the cold season, the city of Celle has now improved the drainage of the underpass. A new drainage pipe was installed to drain water more efficiently. The renovation work that has already been carried out on the part of the underpass to Biermannstrasse has proven successful, so that the underpass has been accessible to pedestrians and cyclists again since Thursday.

Safety in the dark

Visibility is a big issue, especially in winter when the days are shorter. Many cyclists underestimate how difficult they are to be seen in the dark without lights. The ADFC recommends not only working lighting, but also reflective elements for clothing and bags. Particular caution is required: In urban areas, for example, reflective trouser bands ensure better visibility, even with existing light sources.

Visibility is even more important on longer journeys on country roads. Here you should wear large reflective elements such as body belts or high-visibility vests in order to be seen from a greater distance. For any winter cycling activity, the right equipment is essential.

The right equipment for the winter

The choice of bike also plays a central role. Well-maintained bicycles with suitable winter tires are essential for safe winter riding ADAC emphasized. While there is no legal requirement for winter tires in Germany, they offer significant advantages in slippery conditions. In addition, the brakes and gears should be checked for functionality before the cold sets in.

The recommendation to keep the battery warm for e-bikes should not be underestimated in order to maximize performance and range. Good care, especially of the brakes and chain, is essential for the winter months. Particular caution is required in snow and ice: driving slowly and careful steering and braking movements can prevent accidents.
