France on the brink of national crisis: Macron under pressure!

In France, the political situation divides minds. The resignation of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has triggered a wave of discontent. How Le Figaro Reportedly, Lecornu oppressed less than 24 hours after his appointment and is now under pressure to turn things around. Emmanuel Macron has tasked him with “ultimate negotiations” to create a “platform for action and stability” after the political crisis was fueled by Bruno Retailleau.

This crisis is no coincidence, since in an Odoxa poll published on September 4th, 64% of respondents said they wanted Emmanuel Macron to resign. This high number is based on widespread dissatisfaction with the current political leadership. Particularly worrying is the loss of trust in François Bayrou, the current minister, with 76% of French people unconvinced - the highest level since the beginning of the Fifth Republic. Resignation is apparently seen by many as the right step.

The pressure on the president is growing

Meanwhile, the situation remains tense. In addition to facing calls to resign, Macron also faces the challenge of nominating a new prime minister who can gain a majority in parliament. Observers are even warning of a possible national crisis, which sees France on the brink of instability. Lecornu himself had a difficult time because the ruling party does not have a majority in the National Assembly, which placed additional strain on his short term in office.

Public opinion is evident on social media: calls for the president to resign are clear. 56% of the population supports the “Bloquons tout” mobilization, especially among young adults and workers. However, compared to previous protest movements, the numbers are declining. While the Gilets Jaunes came to 71% in 2018, it is now 56%.

What's next?

Further political developments are uncertain. A decision on the future direction of the government is planned by Wednesday evening. Macron must decide whether to name a new prime minister or even call new elections. But the polls speak for themselves: the majority of French people are calling for changes in leadership. In the opposition, the numbers are alarming, with 91% disapproval for the far right and high negative ratings for other parties.

Politics is therefore in a critical state and it remains to be seen how Emmanuel Macron will react to the enormous pressure. Ultimately, the country's political course could depend on what decisions are made now. The scope is getting narrower and the clock is ticking.

We can only hope that there will soon be clarity in French politics so that it doesn't drift further into chaos.
