Political change: Socle Commun dominates committees of the National Assembly!

Yesterday, October 2, 2025, was an important day in the French Parliament when the chairs of the eight standing committees of the National Assembly were re-elected. In a surprising turning point, the... socle commun take over all positions, with the exception of the chairmanship of the Finance Committee, which will continue to be chaired by Eric Coquerel (LFI). This happened with the unexpected support of the Rassemblement national (RN), which this year decided not to put forward its own candidates and instead support the proposals of the socle commun.

The elections ended with some changes at the top of the committees. Florent Boudié (EPR) was re-elected chairman of the Committee on Laws, while Stéphane Travert (apparenté Ensemble pour la République) took responsibility for economic affairs after Aurélie Trouvé (LFI) lost her seat. There was also a change in the cultural sector: Alexandre Portier (Droite républicaine) was elected as the new chairman of the Cultural Affairs Committee after Fatiha Keloua Hachi (PS) was not re-elected.

A look at the new committee chairs

The full list of newly elected committee chairs is as follows:

  • Finanzen: Eric Coquerel (LFI)
  • Gesetze: Florent Boudié (EPR)
  • Wirtschaftliche Angelegenheiten: Stéphane Travert (apparenté Ensemble pour la République)
  • Kulturelle Angelegenheiten: Alexandre Portier (Droite républicaine)
  • Verteidigung: Jean-Michel Jacques (Ensemble pour la République)
  • Soziale Angelegenheiten: Frédéric Valletoux (Horizons)
  • Nachhaltige Entwicklung: Sandrine Le Feur (Ensemble pour la République)
  • Auswärtige Angelegenheiten: Bruno Fuchs (EPR)

In addition, Philippe Juvin (DR) was elected as general budget rapporteur, while Thibault Bazin (DR) retained the role of social security budget rapporteur. These changes within the National Assembly have already caused some excitement.

Criticism and support

After the election there were contradictory reactions. MPs from the Left criticized the socle commun's support of the RN and questioned the integrity of this cooperation. Ludovic Mendes (apparenté Ensemble pour la République) denied all allegations and explained that there was no secret agreement with the RN regarding the distribution of posts.

In conclusion, it can be said that with this restructuring the socle commun has gained influence in the National Assembly. With a total of nine representatives in the National Assembly office, while the RN has five representatives and the Left seven, it will be exciting to see how the political landscape will develop in the coming weeks. The first meeting of the new office is scheduled for Wednesday, and it remains to be seen what decisions will be made there. With all this news, the question remains: how will this impact future legislation?
