Summer exhibition #CARO: Danish Queen inspires regional art!

The anticipation for a special art event in Celle is increasing. On Sunday, July 6, 2025, the time has come: The BBK Celle invites you to the opening of the summer exhibition entitled #Caro. The opening begins at 11:30 a.m. in the FREIRAUM, Schuhstraße 3, and promises not only exciting art, but also a piece of history.

What can visitors expect? The exhibition is dedicated to the fascinating personality of Queen Caroline Mathilde, the last queen of Denmark. On the occasion of its 250th anniversary, the exhibition is designed by artists from the region who examine their lives and work. Impressive works in the areas of painting, photography, installation and sculpture can be seen.

A cultural highlight

The opening will be accompanied by music from the Hey!Ladies crew, which will create a festive atmosphere. Maggie Hönig, M.A., will give the introductory speech and guide guests through their first impressions of the exhibition. Future art lovers and families are cordially invited to take part in this special day.

The doors to the exhibition will be open to interested visitors from July 6th to August 3rd, 2025. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is closed on public holidays. Admission is free and the exhibition room is barrier-free. For further information and details about the exhibition, we recommend visiting the BBK Celle website: bbk-celle.de.

Queen Caroline Mathilde and her time

Caroline Mathilde is known not only for her royal connections, but also for her tragic life story. She spent the last years of her life in exile at Celle Castle and died there at the age of only 23. The exhibition will shed light on the social background of their time and show what influence the Enlightenment movement had on the Danish state through personalities such as Johann Friedrich Struensee. Struensee, a German Enlightenment philosopher and physician, became her lover and attempted to reform Denmark in the spirit of the Enlightenment before being executed in 1772. These abrupt turns in the gem of history are an essential part of the theme of the exhibition, which, as residenzmuseum.de reports, refers to a comprehensive program with further events in the anniversary year.

With this exhibition, the BBK Celle will not only be able to present artistic works, but also take a look back at an eventful and significant time in Danish-German history. Preparations are in full swing and the art scene in Celle can look forward to an exciting event!
