CSD Aurich 2025: Emotional accents and a farewell on the rickshaw!

There was a happy atmosphere in Aurich on August 30, 2025, as Christopher Street Day (CSD) took place with around 600 participants. This day was not only a festive occasion, but also a significant event, as it was the tenth and last CSD under the leadership of the initiator Melly Doden. The incredible atmosphere and beautifully decorated vehicles, including a colorful rickshaw and a golf cart, made the parade unforgettable. The Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe, which took part in this event for the first time, ensured the safety of the participants with a dedicated medical service. They were on site with foot troops and an accident aid center and received a lot of praise from the visitors and from the entertainer Annie Heger for their tireless efforts. Johanniter report that…

The procession started around 1 p.m. and led through Aurich back to the starting point. A highlight was Melly Doden's rickshaw ride to the stage, accompanied by Iris Münchinger. The emotional speech by 19-year-old Aurich Johanniter Lena Behrendt touched the hearts of many in attendance. Sebastian Rauch, representative of JUHnique-Ostfriesland, thanked the participants and emphasized the importance of commitment to the queer community. Group leader Axel Kessler was satisfied with how the medical service went, as there was only one minor incident.

CSD – A look back at 10 years

A lot has happened since the first CSD in Aurich, which Melly Doden launched in 2014. Previously, other events in the region, such as in Emden, Leer and Wilhelmshaven, were part of the program. The CSD is more than just a celebration; It commemorates the uprising of homosexuals against police brutality on New York's Christopher Street in 1969. These are moving times, and the challenges are not always small. OZ reports from…

Melly Doden, who is preparing for the big anniversary in 2025, is hoping for well-known guests to strengthen the mobilization. In recent years, some CSDs have had to be canceled due to illness and the pandemic. A full day of events is planned for 2025 on August 30th, and the anticipation for this tenth CSD in Aurich is growing.

The time afterwards

While the CSD continues to gain momentum, an important topic is fading into the background: queer educational work. From autumn 2025, Ronja Jelena Filiz will support educational work and is planning a series of activities to strengthen the community and reach young people. CSD Germany highlights…

With these initiatives, a changing social mood is coming into focus. In the USA, diversity programs are coming under pressure, and many fear that demands for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people could be ignored again in Germany. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop, but the CSD in Aurich is a strong sign of diversity and solidarity.
