DFB Cup duel: Atlas Delmenhorst against Gladbach – a spectacle in the stadium!

Next Sunday, August 17, 2025, a real highlight awaits football fans in northern Germany: Atlas Delmenhorst will face Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFB Cup. The duel will kick off at 3:30 p.m. in the Marschweg Stadium in Oldenburg, which is already sold out. With around 14,000 spectators, around half of them from Mönchengladbach, the stadium will offer a great atmosphere.

Atlas Delmenhorst is active in the Oberliga Niedersachsen this season and is determined to achieve promotion. In each of the last two years they finished the season in third place and have learned from those experiences. We consider ourselves well prepared and have intensively prepared for the new season. According to sporting director Stephan Ehlers, the priorities are initially to start the season in the Lower Saxony Cup, where they will also play against VfV Hildesheim. This focus should not lead to the cup game against Gladbach being taken less seriously; on the contrary – trainer Key Riebau describes it as a unique experience.

The challenge against Gladbach

Given Atlas' last participation in the DFB Cup, which ended with a 0-5 defeat against FC St. Pauli in the 23/24 season, the team has clear goals. They aim to keep the result as low as possible and maybe even score a goal. The betting odds speak for themselves: Gladbach is the clear favorite with odds of 1.007 for a win, while a win by Atlas is rated at odds of 70.0. Sportwetten24 predicts that at least five goals will be scored, which also reflects the expectations surrounding the game.

Borussia, under the leadership of coach Gerardo Seoane, has high ambitions this season. They are aiming for a place in the Europa League and see the DFB Cup as the crucial competition on this path. Their last duel in the DFB Cup against Atlas took place in the 1980/81 season, where they won clearly 6-1. In their current form, after a solid pre-season in which they only lost one friendly match and opened the season with a 2-0 win against Valencia FC, they are well prepared.

The expectations of the Atlas team

The Atlas squad includes a total of 25 players, including six new faces, which could bring a breath of fresh air to the team. The situation surrounding Lucien Littbarski, the son of the former world-class footballer Pierre Littbarski, is being monitored in particular. Although Riebau is generally satisfied with the preparation, he still sees room for improvement with some players. Together they now want to take on the big challenge against Gladbach.

In summary, it can be said that the DFB Cup game is probably the highlight of the season for Atlas Delmenhorst. The club has prepared well, both in terms of sporting and mental aspects. What will ultimately happen on the pitch remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Atlas players and fans are ready to give it their all when the referee kicks off the game.
