General burglary statistics in Germany

The latest incident in Delmenhorst is part of a worrying development. As the burglary statistics for 2024 show, we are experiencing an increase in residential burglaries throughout Germany. In 2023, 77,819 burglaries were counted nationwide, which corresponds to an increase of 18 percent compared to the previous year. On average there were 213 break-ins every day.

The average damage per burglary is around 3,500 euros, so the total damage caused by burglaries can be estimated at 340 million euros. This increase is partly attributed to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to economic uncertainty.

What you can do against break-ins

Attacks are particularly common in urban areas, while rural areas tend to be safer. Burglary rates are higher in cities, which shows that preventative measures are particularly important. The police therefore recommend actively advising and supporting house and apartment owners on security issues. In any case, mechanical security systems and electronic alarm systems are essential to deter potential perpetrators.

For those affected like the practice in Delmenhorst, we can only hope that the incident can be resolved quickly. After all, good security technology can perhaps prevent further break-ins in the future.
