Panel discussion on domestic violence: Dr. Gumnior in Delmenhorst!

A serious issue is the focus of the next event organized by Alliance 90/THE GREENS Delmenhorst. On November 18, 2025, a panel discussion on the topic of domestic violence will take place at the Hotel Thomsen. Particularly worrying are the increasing numbers of violent crimes, which cannot be ignored in Delmenhorst either. According to the police, 340 victims of domestic violence were registered in the city last year, which is alarmingly high.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Lena Gumnior, member of the Bundestag from Alliance 90/THE GREENS and chairwoman of the Committee for Legal Affairs and Consumer Protection, will take part. She is responsible for issues such as domestic violence, femicide and violence protection. At a time when many women no longer see their own home as a safe place, their expertise will be of great importance. Rosa Eickhorst-Neugeborn, her party's women's policy spokeswoman, will also speak and point out the problem that the home often becomes a danger zone for women.

Lack of space in women's shelters

A central topic of the discussion will be the current lack of space in the Delmenhorst women's shelter. It currently only offers six places for affected women and children, although at least eight would be necessary to adequately cover the needs of the city. The circumstances are worrying because last year 152 women had to be turned away or relocated due to a lack of space. The condition of the women's shelter, which is housed in a building from the 1930s, does not meet the requirements for additional places and retreats, especially for children.

The urgency of the problem is also reflected in the lack of support for male victims of domestic violence. It is important to find solutions here too in order to do justice to all victims.

Insights into domestic violence in Germany

The discussion on domestic violence in Germany is not only relevant locally, but also reflects a much larger, national problem. According to current statistics, around 181,000 victims of domestic violence in Germany in 2023 were female, including a high proportion of intimate partner violence. These figures make it clear how crucial measures to prevent and support victims are. Domestic violence, which often occurs in a personal environment, often goes undetected because the willingness to report it is low due to shame and feelings of guilt.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is celebrated annually on November 25th and highlights the urgency of these issues. It is a task for society as a whole to find ways to outlaw violence in all forms and to provide victims with the support they need to break out of violent relationships.

The event on November 18, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. in the Hotel Thomsen is open and free of charge for anyone interested. Nadja Allmers-Plump, chairwoman of the district association of Bündnis 90/DIE GREENS, will moderate the event. It is an opportunity to find out more, ask questions and discuss together the necessary steps to combat domestic violence. Visit the event and take a stand against violence!
