Three children trapped in the car in the sweltering heat – firefighters save!
On June 24, 2025, an incident occurred in Visselhövede, Rotenburg district, which once again illustrates the dangers of driving in high temperatures. Three children aged 8, 10 and 12 were trapped in the car during a strawberry picking trip when the outside temperature rose to a whopping 30 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the parents of one of the children were looking for berries in a field while the children sought shelter from the scorching heat in the vehicle and accidentally closed the doors. After about 25 minutes in the car, during which the children became increasingly anxious and overheated, the concerned parents called the fire department for help. NDR reports that...
The fire brigade arrived shortly after the alarm and immediately began rescue operations. The emergency services initially protected the car from direct sunlight with heavy blankets to reduce the interior temperature. They also cooled both the blankets and the vehicle with cold water from the fire truck. A folding gazebo was placed over the car to provide additional protection from the heat. Since the doors couldn't be opened and the windows were also blocked, the firefighters ultimately had no choice but to break a side window to free the children. They were able to climb through the window and were then examined in the ambulance as a precaution - luckily they were uninjured and could be brought back to their parents. The NN reports on the progress...
Heat in the car – an underestimated danger
The events in Visselhövede highlight a serious problem that many parents underestimate. Loud Growing up safely Leaving children in parked cars in high temperatures poses significant health risks. The internal temperature can increase dramatically in a very short period of time. While an outside temperature of 20 degrees can lead to 36 degrees in the car after 30 minutes, at 34 degrees this rises to a frightening 50 degrees. Children in particular have difficulty regulating their body temperature, which puts them at particular risk in such situations.
Parents should therefore make sure that children are never left alone in the car - even for a short time. In most cases, it is the best intentions that lead to dangerous situations, as the example of this family shows. It is important to always keep a close eye on the safety of your little adventurers and, when in doubt, to err on the side of caution.
It is all the sadder that the importance of heat protection plans in daycare centers and schools is repeatedly pushed into the background. The DAK state chief is therefore calling for more information and precautionary measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
Considering this dangerous situation, it is also worth mentioning that the fire brigade in Visselhövede found, in addition to the children, a dog that was also locked in the car. This incident shows once again how urgent it is to keep an eye on all passengers - whether human or animal - in the car.
