Emden is blossoming: new cafés, bakeries and nail salons are opening!

A lot is happening in Emden city center: two new cafés, a bakery and a nail salon want to bring a breath of fresh air into the city. These new openings are not only a ray of hope for local business people, but could also help make the city center more lively again.

First of all, there is the café “Meta’s Granddaughter”, which opens its doors on Oldersumer Straße at the beginning of July. Owner Anita Demiri was inspired by her grandparents, especially her grandfather, who had a weakness for sweet delicacies. The café offers a cozy atmosphere, freshly brewed coffee and delicious specialties. For anyone who would like to reserve a place, the team is available by telephone and will ensure that your stay is pleasant. metasenkelin.de highlights the charm and hospitality of the new restaurant.

Family bakery as a new addition

The Musswessels family bakery will open on Neutorstrasse on July 3rd. This bakery is known not only for its delicious baked goods, but also for the special discounts offered in the first few days on the entire range - excluding only some merchandise. This is particularly exciting as the location was previously used by Rector Bakery, which merged in 2023 and filed for bankruptcy in 2024. Musswessels already operates a branch in the Emder Westcenter and in the train station and will now revitalize the abandoned area with new offerings.

Another new addition is the nail salon Venus Nails, which opens on July 2nd on Große Straße. Here, visitors can look forward to comprehensive manicure and pedicure services.

The view of urban development

These new businesses come at a time when the city of Emden is actively working to revitalize the city center. A study by imakomm shows that in the coming years the number of retail businesses could fall by up to 14%, while catering businesses can expect a decline of 6-7%. Vacancy rates in various warehouses have also increased, highlighting the need for sustainable urban development. dstgb.de emphasizes the central tasks for municipalities, in particular the transformation of inner cities into mixed-use and attractive locations.

The measures that the city is taking, such as setting up the MachBar as a community center, aim to increase the frequency and attractiveness of the city center. It remains to be seen whether these initiatives will be enough to meet the challenges of retail and gastronomy and attract more citizens back to the city.
