Speeder in Emden: Police break off pursuit of dangerous motorcycle escape!
What happened on a Sunday in Emden not only upset the police there. On June 15, 2025, around 3:20 p.m., a motorcyclist on Niedersachsenstrasse attracted attention because of his dangerous driving maneuvers, which resulted in a prohibited motor vehicle race. The route led over the outer harbor and the south quay to Jarßumer Hafen and was the scene of risky driving and so-called “wheelies”, as oz-online.de reports. The driver, who was driving a black racing bike, a Suzuki GSX-R1000, exhibited so-called poser behavior: accelerating hard and riding on the rear wheel were just some of his risky actions. Numerous video recordings document these spectacular scenes, which also show other vehicles as well as pedestrians and cyclists.
Alarm bells rang for the police, who tried to stop the driver. But due to his high speed, the pursuit was broken off. The motorcyclist was described as male, between 20 and 30 years old and around 1.70 to 1.80 meters tall. His clothing consisted of black parts with orange applications.
Illegal races in focus
The problem of illegal car racing is not new. Press service reports that the Emden police are now asking for information about the driving style, the race or the driver. The officials can be contacted on 04921/8910. Participation in such races, as what happened in Emden shows, can have serious consequences. Since the laws were tightened in 2017, the penalty for engaging in illegal motor vehicle racing can be up to two years in prison. In the event of serious injuries or deaths, there is a risk of up to ten years in prison, as the NRW Police explains.
Even the vehicles themselves are not safe. According to Section 315f StGB, these can be confiscated even if they do not belong to the driver. A zero-tolerance strategy is pursued if participation in illegal races is suspected, with the police regularly carrying out heavy-duty checks.
Creating social awareness
Regardless of the legal consequences, the incident in Emden also highlighted a social issue. Awareness of the dangers of such races is essential to prevent accidents and injuries. A similar initiative by the Cologne police, under the motto "I'm cool! #I don't care", shows that younger generations should also be made aware of the issue.
Whether the motorcyclist's less-than-glorious appearance on Sunday will help raise awareness remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: the streets are not a place for uncontrolled racing and the police will do everything in their power to stop such actions. Any tip-off about the speeding driver is welcome - it's high time to stop speeding on the roads.
