Camping trend in Gifhorn: New pitches after fire at Aldi!
A lot is happening in Gifhorn: The trend of traveling in motorhomes is very popular not only in Germany, but also here in the region. More and more people are choosing to spend their holidays in their own camping vehicle. In 2024, 4,200 guests used the mobile home parking space on the Allerwelle. This means that this space is almost fully utilized. In order to meet the growing demand, the city is planning a new parking space with up to 10 spaces near the mill museum, which is expected to be completed in spring 2026. According to a recent survey, almost 13 million Germans will have vacationed in a motorhome or caravan in 2024, and Statista highlights that Germany has the highest number of new registrations of recreational vehicles in Europe.
But it's not just camping life that's a topic of conversation in Gifhorn. A serious fire in the Aldi store on Adam-Riese-Strasse has kept the city busy in recent weeks. On Tuesday, April 30th, there was a spectacular fire department operation when the roof of the market collapsed. The alarm was raised at 5:20 a.m. and 105 firefighters were deployed, supported by police and emergency services. Residents received alerts via the Nina app and were asked to close their windows and doors and stay indoors. The extinguishing work lasted until midday, the police have seized the scene of the fire and the investigation into the cause is ongoing. The estimated damage is around two million euros, which makes the situation particularly dramatic for the affected residents and the city, as this incident was not the first of its kind. A similar fire in Gamsen burned an Aldi to the ground in June 2023.
New buildings and modernization
The events also cast a shadow on Aldi's planned new buildings in Gifhorn, which are being pushed forward after the fires. The company is working closely with the city to quickly initiate reconstruction measures. In Gamsen, a modernization of the Aldi location is also underway, while no sales tent has been set up at the location near the tangent to bridge the time until completion.
Current challenges in the city
The current fire events and the ongoing construction work also raise questions about the security situation and the infrastructure in Gifhorn. The city is currently renewing Hamburger Straße in Gamsen, but the work is dragging on. Delays due to a lack of asphalt base layer have meant that major expansion has become necessary. Residents have to be prepared for further inconveniences, as the next construction phase between Robinienweg and the Christinenstift intersection is expected to be completely closed next year.
At a time when numerous road renovations are taking place and the fire department has to deal with major events, the police have also reported alcohol and cannabis violations. A strange thing happened at Calberlaher Damm, where a vodka thief with a blood alcohol level of 3.61 put the police to the test. This weekend there were also several traffic accidents under the influence of alcohol. The challenges are many, but the people of Gifhorn are resilient and will also overcome these hurdles.
