Gifhorn shines in pink: A light for the rights of girls!
Next Saturday, October 11th, it will be colorful again in Gifhorn! On the occasion of World Girls' Day, several of the city's landmarks shine in bright pink. This action by the organization Plan International was launched, has developed into a nationwide tradition over the last ten years. The aim is to draw attention to the rights of girls and to send a strong signal for equality and joy in life.
In Gifhorn, the castle, the “Lady Devorgilla” wedding mill and the GWG service center are illuminated in shimmering pink. This blaze of color should not only catch the eye, but also convey the courage to be proactive and joie de vivre. “We want to get people thinking about the challenges that many girls around the world face,” explains a spokesperson for Plan International.
World Girls Day background
World Girls' Day has been celebrated worldwide since 2011, when the United Nations officially declared it the "International Day of the Girl Child." It's not just about a happy celebration, but also about serious issues: 119 million girls have no access to education, and almost one in five girls is married before their 18th birthday. These and many other dramatic figures will be brought to the fore on the day of action. Over 21 million girls under the age of five are acutely malnourished and numerous girls experience discrimination and violence.
On October 11th, various actions will take place in many cities in Germany to draw attention to these grievances. This includes information stands, film evenings and readings. The first events started on October 5th, including a colorful evening in Oldenburg and an information stand in Mönchengladbach. There will also be a benefit reading with the well-known actor Tim Bergmann in Munich on October 10th.
Cities glowing pink for an important cause
In many cities, such as Munich, Hamburg and Bonn, important buildings are illuminated in pink. This lighting symbolizes strength and the pursuit of equality. In Wolfsburg, the town hall and the Phaeno will be illuminated, while in Bonn, events are planned in Bad Godesberg, Bad Hönningen and Remagen. The AG Hamburg also organizes light installations at various monuments.
“It is important to us to use actions like these to show worldwide that girls deserve the same opportunities as boys,” the Plan International spokeswoman continued. This combative attitude is further emphasized by the pink lights and is intended to create a feeling of connection and support for the rights of girls.
Overall, World Girls' Day is intended to encourage us to think about the position of girls in our society and to support them in their right to a safe and fair future. The people of Gifhorn have the opportunity to actively participate on Saturday and set an example - let's shine together!
