Heat wave in the north: up to 39 degrees and acute risk of forest fires!

The summer heat has us firmly under control! Today, July 1, 2025, temperatures in Lower Saxony will climb to a dizzying 39 degrees Celsius, a cause for concern for many citizens. Particularly on the coast, the temperatures are not quite as oppressive with slightly milder temperatures, but there too the values rise to 29 to 34 degrees Celsius NDR reported.

The high temperatures also pose a significant risk of forest fires. In many regions of Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the alert level has risen to the highest level of 5, with this impending danger particularly to be expected in Greifswald and Waren an der Müritz. In Lower Saxony, the Gifhorn district is considered to be at high risk.

Heat and health risks

It is important to take care of your health on this hot day. The German Weather Service (DWD) expressly warns of a “very high” health risk from UV radiation, especially for older people. This group is considered particularly vulnerable, but even younger and physically fit people are not protected from overheating. Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea and headaches should be taken seriously.

In extreme temperatures, the death rate increases, especially among older people. According to that RKI Heat-related deaths are often the result of a combination of heat and existing health problems such as heart or lung disease. In recent heatwaves, particularly 2018 and 2019, over 15,600 additional deaths were attributed to the heat.

Information measures in the heat

It's not just Lower Saxony that is affected - the forecasts indicate that the problem of extreme temperatures could become even more acute in the near future. The Federal Environment Agency points out that due to climate change, the number of “hot days” and tropical nights will increase in the coming years, which has already led to extreme heat waves in the past. The effects of the urban heat island effect are particularly noticeable in inner cities, where temperatures can be up to 10 degrees higher than on the outskirts.

The situation is worrying and we can only hope that the coming days will be cooler and that the summer heat will no longer bother us.
