Rescue in an emergency: fire drill in Brome delights spectators!
On Saturday evening, a large-scale alarm exercise in the Brome municipality caused tense moments. How regionalheute.de reported, the exercise was alerted by the Gifhorn control center shortly before 8 p.m. The scenario: a head-on collision between three vehicles, in which several people were trapped and one of the vehicles was on fire. The emergency services had to deal with the situation in a realistically staged field of rubble, which was equipped with extras and training dummies in make-up.
Operations manager Nils Schödler from the Brome fire department coordinated the 35 participants during the exercise. The firefighters carried out a comprehensive investigation of the situation, looked after the injured and set up lighting. A team wearing heavy respiratory protection worked to secure the burning vehicle and extinguish the resulting engine fire, while the coordinated cooperation of the emergency services was put to the test.
Challenges of rescue
The firefighters had to use scissors and spreaders to free several “injured people” from the vehicles. In this challenging situation, a vehicle also had to be stabilized before the doors could be opened. Finally, after a short search, a missing person was found in an adjacent field and handed over to the emergency services. The Haerting rescue service was on site with three ambulances and provided medical care for a total of eight training patients, including a “baby” in the shape of a doll.
Community fire chief Frank-Friedrich Mosel was present as a management assistant and was very satisfied with the cooperation of the emergency services. After three intensive hours, the exercise ended at around 11 p.m. with a debriefing in the Brome fire station, where hot sausage and rolls were served to strengthen the participants.
A look outside the box
Such exercises are essential in order to be well prepared in an emergency. For example, the first responder group at the Ursensollen fire department regularly carries out similar training courses that focus on initial medical care and patient-friendly rescue after traffic accidents. The focus is on techniques that are particularly gentle on the injured person's spine. Another important point is the special rescue techniques for trucks, where the higher seating position and the confined space in the driver's cab pose additional challenges, such as feuerwehr-ursensollen.de explained.
Participation in these exercises is not only a duty, but also an opportunity for the emergency services to continuously improve their skills and optimally prepare for an emergency. Despite all the challenges, the goal always remains to ensure safety in the community and to protect the population as best as possible.
