Traffic chaos in Hillerse: intersection accident with several injured!

On December 8, 2025, at 4:45 p.m., a traffic accident occurred in the intersection of Rolfsbütteler Straße, Eichenkamp and Katreppel in Hillerse. This accident involved a VW Passat with two people from the Gifhorn district and a Dacia Sandero with two people from the Peine district. Fortunately, all those involved in the accident were only slightly injured and were quickly transported to the surrounding hospitals in Peine and Gifhorn. Teams of three ambulances and an emergency doctor were deployed for this purpose. The rescue work meant that the intersection area had to be completely closed for a while. Information about the exact cause of the accident is not yet available, which does not make the situation any easier for those responsible.

Traffic accidents occur again and again in Germany, and they often have serious consequences. According to Statista, there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in 2024, a decrease compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the number of personal injury accidents remains at a similar level to the 1950s. The goal of the EU transport ministers, the so-called “Vision Zero”, aims to achieve zero traffic deaths by 2050.

A look at the causes of accidents

The most common causes of accidents with personal injuries are insufficient distance, inadequate speed and driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2024, 40% of alcohol-related accidents resulted in personal injuries, resulting in 198 deaths and over 17,000 injuries. The importance of safe behavior on the road cannot be emphasized enough. Despite extensive measures taken by authorities to increase security, the human factor often remains the biggest stumbling block.

Another worrying trend is the increase in e-bike and e-scooter accidents, with over 26,000 e-bike riders injured or killed in 2024. This shows that road users of all kinds need to develop an increased awareness of their safety on the roads in order to avoid similar accidents.

In this context, it is important that the transport infrastructure is further improved and innovative technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, are promoted in order to get closer to Vision Zero. Even in accidents like the one in Hillerse, where fortunately no serious injuries were reported, the challenge remains to minimize accidents through education and technical advances. It remains to be hoped that those affected will recover from their injuries as quickly as possible.
