ADAC helicopter makes a safety landing in Göttingen: What happened?

On June 6th, an unusual incident occurred in Göttingen when the ADAC helicopter “Christoph Westfalen” made a safety landing at the Dragoonanger. This landing took place at 3:15 p.m., just one minute after takeoff from Göttingen University Hospital. The pilot made it clear that this was not an emergency landing, but a safety measure, as continuing the flight would have entailed greater risks. Technical problems that led to the landing were not specified, but at no time was there any danger to the crew or the patient on board.

The helicopter, which had previously flown a patient requiring intensive care from Paderborn to the university hospital, was able to fly on to its destination in Greven after more than an hour of intensive discussions with technicians. The “Christoph Westfalen” took off again at 4:22 p.m. and landed safely at the air rescue center in Greven at 5:13 p.m.

Intensive air rescue in North Rhine-Westphalia

The “Christoph Westfalen” has been one of the two intensive care transport helicopters in use in North Rhine-Westphalia since 2002. The helicopter stationed in Greven is operational around the clock and has already been called to emergencies or transfers over 16,000 times. He often transports patients from the region, mainly from Höxter and other places in North Rhine-Westphalia, to Göttingen. ADAC Luftrettung operates a total of over 50 helicopters and is one of the largest air rescue organizations in Europe. Their goal is to ensure safe transport and optimal care for patients.ADAC Luftrettung

Modern machinery and high quality standards are essential, and some of the helicopters are even equipped with rescue winches for extreme conditions. In 2018, ADAC Luftrettung also initiated a feasibility study on manned multicopters in the rescue service in order to further improve the rescue service system.

Emergency forces and their importance

Another important player in air rescue is DRF Luftrettung, which offers quick and professional help from the air. With around 1,400 employees, the organization has declared team spirit, responsibility and joy to be its core values. They are constantly looking for qualified reinforcements and offer a wide range of job and career opportunities, ranging from HEMS teams to doctors to pilots and technicians.DRF Luftrettung

The regular transports of intensive care patients, such as those carried out by “Christoph Westfalen”, show how important these air rescue services are for health care in the region. Thanks to this professional support, rapid and effective care is guaranteed for many patients, which is of great importance in medical emergencies.
