CDU office in Göttingen: Entered-activists protest

The CDU office in Göttingen was targeted in an unusual way on Monday night. Activists blocked the entrance and walled it with ytong stones. When the employees came to work on Monday morning, they found this bizarre building campaign and could only get back into their offices after a call to the police. A banner with the lettering "closed" hung on the wall, while another banner moved a clear position: "Because of your war lovers and racist foreclosure policy". This is reported by the Göttinger Tageblatt .

The police reacted promptly and removed parts of the wall, so that the employees could get access to their workplace again. Now the case is in the hands of the investigators who have already gained experience with similar incidents in this office. In the past few months, the location has also been the target of politically motivated attacks, including color bombs that were thrown in January and February

political attacks in the trend

The disorders at the CDU office are part of a worrying trend. According to a report by SPIEGEL Number of politically motivated attacks increased. This development not only affects the CDU, but also other political organizations. As a rule, such actions are launched by extremist groups that question the validity of the state constitution and want to undermine the principles of democracy.

This becomes particularly clear when you look at the statistics on politically motivated crime in Germany. In 2023, over 60,000 crimes were recorded under this category, including both extremist and politically motivated offenses such as property damage and acts of violence. The number of crimes that can be assigned to the left extremism that has increased 10% compared to the previous year is particularly alarming. More than 4,000 left-wing extremist-motivated offenses were recorded last year alone, while the right-wing extremist spectrum is also at a maximum of about 25,700 crimes, such as the analysis of the data of Statista shows.

A look into the future

The incidents in Göttingen raise questions about the stability and cohesion of the political landscape in Germany. It remains to be seen which consequences the investigation into the blockade of the CDU office will result. In the meantime, it is clear that increasing extremism, whether from left or from the right, poses great challenges.

The actors in politics are now required to position themselves and to take action against these questionable developments. At a time when the boundaries between protest and violence are increasingly blurred, it is more important than ever to stand up for an open and democratic discussion culture.
