Göttingen Schützenfest 2025: A festival of tradition and diversity!
On Sunday, June 22nd, Göttingen celebrated its 633rd shooting festival. In bright sunshine and a summery 30 degrees, young and old gathered to enjoy the traditional event. The parade started on Danziger Strasse and took the participants along Reinhäuser Landstrasse into the city center, directly to the market square. What a joy to see all the uniformed riflemen and hustle and bustle!
With such high temperatures, the uniform was of course a challenge for many participants. It was all the more pleasing that the shooters were chauffeured in historic American sleighs, thereby enriching the image of the festival. Music bands and numerous shooting clubs paraded through the streets, and athletes from the city sports association also took part. Particularly noteworthy are the female athletes in the Rhönrad, who thrilled the audience with their performances.
A festival for the whole city
The Göttingen Citizens and Shooting Festival, which took place this year from June 19th to 23rd, is organized by the Göttingen Citizens and Shooting Society (BSG). With a variety of attractions and program items, the festival is aimed at all citizens. New this year: numerous sports clubs took part in the traditional parade, which gave the event a fresh touch. Line dancers, rope skippers and the Göttingen Shanty Choir also had their say with great performances.
It's not just showmen waiting for visitors at the festival site, which is located in the parking lot at the Jahnstadion. A 20-meter Ferris wheel and a ghost train promise thrills and fun for the whole family. The young showman Charles Recke provides culinary delights with his malt rolls, which are deliciously served with crusty roast and his own sauce. Another highlight were the performances by the German Theater (DT) and the Young Theater (JT) in the festival tent, where admission was free.
Tradition and conviviality
The course of a shooting festival follows wonderful traditions that go back to the Middle Ages. They usually begin with a shooting competition to crown the new shooting king, followed by a ceremonial procession and the election of the kings. The Göttingen riflemen don't miss out here; they know how to throw a big party. On Monday, June 23rd, the festival will conclude with a traditional shooting breakfast in the marquee in the parking lot at the Jahnstadion. It starts at 10 a.m., where the program also includes musical contributions from the Werra Valley brass musicians and speeches from Europe, the state parliament and the Bundestag.
Overall, the Göttingen shooting festival shows once again that shooting festivals in Germany are more than just celebratory parades. Over 15,000 shooting clubs across the country ensure that this tradition remains alive and continues to grow. The Göttingen Schützenausmarsch is a great example of how tradition is combined with modern elements to create a celebration for the entire community. Cheers to cohesion and conviviality!
