Night of Culture in Göttingen: Thousands celebrate in tropical temperatures!

On Saturday evening, June 15, 2025, the vibrant “Night of Culture” took place again in Göttingen, attracting thousands of people to the city center. With summer temperatures around 30 degrees and an atmosphere reminiscent of a tropical night, the old town was transformed into a lively center for art and culture. Over 13 stages and 31 other locations offered a diverse range of offerings in the areas of music, theater, visual arts and literature. The event is now an integral part of the event calendar and has replaced the Old Town Festival, which last took place in 2004. This reports HNA.

The musical journey began at 3 p.m. with South American sounds next to St. John's Church. At the Nikolaikirche, DJ Sa.Sy.Sa transformed the churchyard into a rousing open-air disco. Here he mixed Afro, house and dance beats that got the audience dancing. At 6 p.m. the duo Father & Son performed, combining jazz and hip-hop with saxophone and DJ sets. The performance by Roland Wander & Dominik Pytka at 4:30 p.m. also ensured a good mood, as they conjured up catchy pop and songwriter charm for the audience.

A diverse program for everyone

Back to the main stage at the weekly market: Here the singer Luca Noel from Mannheim offered an impressive concert. From 8 p.m., the audience experienced the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra (GSO), which performed in front of a sold-out audience. Later, from 9:30 p.m., the “Tora Bora Allstars” made their big appearance, where reggae, ragga and ska lit up the night with an unmistakable groove. However, many visitors expressed their disappointment when the music ended at 11 p.m., which brought an early end to this successful evening event.

Another highlight of the night was the “Special Play Hour” at the Nörgelbuff stage on Groner Straße, which offered a varied program with acoustic guitars, electric piano and cajon from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. This part of the event was enriched by various musicians, including Maria and Dietmar Goretzki and The Flat Shoals. These performances, along with a ukulele jam session at Nikolaikirchhof, guaranteed a busy schedule for music fans on the go.

Traffic measures and safety aspects

To ensure the safety of visitors, the inner city ring was closed to traffic from 2 p.m., which also applied to rerouted bus routes. This allowed participants to enjoy the events carefree and take in the atmosphere to the fullest.

The “Night of Culture” is not only a celebration for art and music lovers, but also an opportunity for everyone to celebrate Göttingen’s cultural heritage. Other events in the region, like this Afro cultural festival in Hessen Park as well as that Danube Festival in Austria, show that cultural events are very popular in the region. The Göttingen Kulturgarage will ensure that it remains alive with the next event.
