Bird flu alarms: poultry breeding association cancels breed show!

In northern Germany, especially in the Göttingen district, bird flu is currently causing great concern among poultry farmers. Reiner Schmitz, chairman of the Hann Poultry Breeding Association. Münden, today canceled the breed poultry show that was planned for November 8th and 9th. The reason for this is an outbreak of bird flu in a crane in the southern Harz. The H5N1 virus is spreading throughout Germany and has already resulted in over 500,000 poultry having to be killed. Hna reports that ...

The situation is serious because the Central Association of the German Poultry Industry has called for compulsory stables. There is currently no obligation to have stables in the Göttingen district, but this measure could come into force if the situation worsens. Compulsory stables mean that poultry can only be kept in stables or under tight covers to avoid contact with wild birds. This could be particularly challenging for geese, as they need a lot of space to move around.

Challenges for breeders

The poultry breeding association in Hann. Münden has around 30 breeders who look after around 500 animals. To protect their stocks, breeders vaccinate their animals against bird flu and other diseases. Burkhard Bleyer, operator of a farm with 33,000 chickens, has already taken precautions and keeps his animals in the stable to protect them from possible infections from wild birds. To ensure the health of his chickens, they are checked twice a day. The employees disinfect themselves and wear protective clothing when entering the stables.

Henrik Ludewig, who runs the Niemetaler Hof, also expresses concerns about crows that regularly fly over his farm. These feathered fellows raise questions about the health of his animals. If there are unexpected deaths among the chickens, the veterinary office will be informed immediately to clarify the causes.

Public perception and caution

Bird flu is usually harmless to humans, but the current outbreak is causing concern among the population. The cancellation of the breed poultry show not only represents a cancellation of events, but also opens a discussion about the associated challenges in poultry farming.

The situation clearly shows that good skills are required in poultry farming. If the situation worsens, breeders could face even greater challenges. In the meantime, all that remains is to keep a close eye on the animals and take any necessary measures to ensure their safety.
