What's happening in Göttingen? In the city, which is blessed with numerous sports clubs and talented athletes, the “Hero of the Season” 2025 is currently being sought. The Göttingen Tageblatt has announced 45 nominations, these are the “Heroes of the Week” since July 2024. Whether athlete or team – voting runs until July 31st on the Tageblatt homepage. The winners can look forward to great prizes. The individual winners each receive an iPad, and the team of the season receives a grant of 500 euros. And if you are among those who vote, you can also win an iPad.
The nominated athletes are a veritable “Who’s Who” of the regional sports landscape. A total of 32 men are up for election, including Saliou Hansen from FC Grone and the two TC Gieboldehausen stars Andre Metenyszyn and Jan Golenia. Among the female athletes, the competition is led by Flora Kliem, the German archery champion. Among the teams, the U15 team from JFV 37 Göttingen and the young basketball players from the Sartorius Youngsters U16 performed particularly well.
A look at the sports awards ceremony
But that's not all that Göttingen has to offer in terms of sport. On January 30, 2025, the traditional sports honor of the city of Göttingen and the university took place in the Sparkasse Arena, organized by the Göttingen Sport and Leisure GmbH (GöSF). At this gala, 111 athletes were honored and a total of 5 gold sports plaques were awarded. This honors the multitude of outstanding achievements in various disciplines, including basketball, athletics and archery.
Among the outstanding athletes who received a gold plaque were Kira Wittmann and Luis Oberbeck from the Göttingen Athletics Association, who both performed successfully at the European Team Championships. Flora Kliem from ASC 1846 and Jennifer Crowder from BG 74 Göttingen were also honored for their impressive successes. In addition, 16 athletes were awarded silver and 41 bronze, including numerous young talents.
Special commitments and successes
Göttingen is not only known as a city of sports, but also as a place with countless opportunities to do sports. With over 100 sports venues and a clear focus on improving sports infrastructure, the city plans to invest around 2 million euros to strengthen cooperation between the city and the university. This shows how important sport is to the local community.
The importance of volunteering is also recognized, as with the award given to the organizing team of the Paul-Otto Tournament and the “Every Training Counts” team, which was honored for its tireless efforts. The successes of the Göttingen athletes are not only eye-catching at the state level, but have also made an impression in national and international competitions.
