Chaos at Hagenmarkt: Construction sites are causing discontent in Braunschweig!

There is currently construction chaos in Braunschweig - and not just for pedestrians passing by. The groundbreaking ceremony for the redesign of the Hagenmarkt took place on August 11, 2025. Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum gave the official starting signal for a major project that is intended to improve the city center. However, the project is causing some dissatisfaction among residents and business owners. There are numerous restrictions that significantly disrupt daily operations. “We have difficulties welcoming our customers and patients properly,” reports Matthias Katschmareck, the owner of the sewing center.

What is particularly annoying is the difficulty for customers to find their way around due to the numerous construction sites. The interest and advertising group Casparistrasse criticizes the inadequate planning, particularly the poor signage and the lack of ramps that allow people with walking disabilities to reach the shops safely. Bernd Schroers, spokesman for the community, describes the situation as confusing: A detour sign for cyclists causes additional confusion because the arrows are difficult to understand. However, the city has already announced that it will implement measures to improve the situation, including the introduction of better signage and additional ramps for walkers and wheelchair users.

The project in detail

The redesign project at Hagenmarkt aims to create an attractive city square that will be equipped with seating and space for small events. What is particularly striking is the plan to offer the catering industry generous outdoor seating areas. The mayor's administration also plans to replant over 80 trees and shrubs in order to reforest the area and incorporate climate change into the planning.

The extensive area desealing is also intended to contribute to rainwater management and to store and use rainwater sustainably. In order to meet the demands of increasingly extreme weather events, the road space including intersections is being rebuilt, while supply and disposal lines are being replaced.

Impact of the construction site

From August 13, 2025, the Bohlweg at Hagenmarkt will be completely closed, and Casparistrasse will also only be accessible to residents. The entire construction period is scheduled to last around 13 months, which represents a test of patience for everyone involved. The estimated total cost of the project is 7.35 million euros, with 1.12 million euros already available from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). An application to increase the funding to 1.7 million euros is being processed to take account of the increased costs.

Despite the announced improvements and suggestions for improvement, the mood in the city center remains tense. The city therefore asks for the understanding of citizens and business owners during this challenging time. It remains to be hoped that the positive effects of the redesign will soon outweigh the inconveniences and that the Hagenmarkt can shine in new splendor.
