The smallest kingdom in the world: Romkerhall fascinates tourists!
At the foot of the Harz, not far from Goslar, a bizarre legend tells of a very special place: the “Kingdom of Romkerhall”. This charming spot, located in an unincorporated area, is hailed as the smallest kingdom in the world. Visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in its unique world, which features its own currencies, coats of arms and royal insignia. Not forgetting the possibility of obtaining a “visa” upon check-in! T-Online reports that ...
Romkerhall's history dates back to the 19th century, when it was originally built as a hunting lodge for King George V of Hanover. But after the Prussian annexation of Hanover in 1866, the place lost its importance and was converted into a hotel. It was only in the 1980s that the hotel owner published the creative idea of converting the hotel into a “kingdom” because the property was no longer assigned to a municipality due to a regional reform. This is how the “Kingdom of Romkerhall” saw the light of day.
The royal family and royal traditions
The story of the kingdom's royal family is particularly amusing. Princess Erina of Saxony, who was previously married to Timo of Saxony, a descendant of the last king of Saxony, was enthroned as early as 1988. After her death in 2010, Susanne Bauer took on the title “Princess Susanne of Romkerhall” and worked to ensure that Romkerhall could continue to flourish as a tourist attraction. She discovered the place in 2006 and opened its doors to the world.
Like a real monarch, the knighthood is ceremoniously carried out here! Nevertheless, no one wants to pursue political ambitions here, because the small kingdom is and remains a magical tourist destination. Wikipedia further states that...
Attractions and beauties of nature
One of the kingdom's main features is the Romkerhall Waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in the Harz with an impressive height of around 64 meters. Although artificially created, it blends harmoniously into the natural surroundings and attracts many hikers who want to explore the surrounding climbing rocks and hiking trails. Harzlife describes the waterfall as...
The area around Romkerhall covers around 5,000 square meters and, in addition to the waterfall, is also home to a castle hotel and a restaurant, which are accessible to everyone. The Königstaler, introduced in 1988, is also popular - its own currency, which, however, never became widespread. Visitors are warmly invited to get married in the audience hall and learn about the traditions of the “Kingdom” in a charming way.
Dark shadows and challenges
However, the idyll also has its dark sides. In 2024, a mysterious fire occurred in the nearby Villa Helene; the background is still unclear today. However, such dark chapters do not seem to be able to detract from the magic of the region, as hiking trails and the surrounding nature offer impressive views and experiences.
The “Kingdom of Romkerhall” remains a tempting destination for hiking enthusiasts, nature lovers and the curious. It is a place where history and modernity meet and adventure is just one step away.
