Irrigation ban in Hamelin: tennis and riding clubs fighting!
In Hamelin, the summer months are characterized by drought, which poses major challenges for tennis and riding clubs in particular. There is currently a strict ban on watering, which significantly restricts the maintenance of the pitches between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Loud dewezet.de This has already led to a deterioration in the quality of the course and increases the risk of injury for players and horses.
Maria Bergmann from the district sports association emphasizes that the green spaces that can be saved can become dangerous without sufficient irrigation. There were falls at a recent tennis tournament, the relog Cup, but fortunately no serious injuries. The chairman of the German Tennis Club Hameln (DTH), Axel Rojczik, expresses incomprehension that the regulation did not take the specific needs of the tennis courts into account.
Tennis courts require ongoing maintenance to remain playable. Tennis-Stommeln.de emphasizes the importance of well-watered areas. Before and after play, courts should be watered to stabilize the ground, while unevenness should be addressed immediately during play. Rojczik activated his club's automatic irrigation system at 9 a.m. to bring enough water to the pitches before the game. But despite all the measures, the players often have to play in the dust, which makes the conditions anything but ideal at the moment.
An additional problem is the question of costs for possible conversion measures to hard courts. These could be between 20,000 and 70,000 euros per place, which is a big hurdle for many clubs. There is currently a discussion about an exemption for tournament days and league games, but the DTH's attempts have so far been unsuccessful. Compared to the Hanover region, where irrigation bans are only imposed at certain temperatures, the clubs in Hamelin want more flexibility.
The general order on water withdrawal remains in effect until September 30th, but the topic of care and irrigation is not only relevant for the coming weeks. Maria Bergmann announces that the issue will be discussed in the next Committee for Families, Daycare Centers and Sport on October 1st.
As in any sport, good care is essential. Kates.de highlights that more intensive care of the tennis courts is required immediately after spring preparation. Regular watering, rolling and stripping are all measures that increase playing quality and safety. During daily maintenance, attention should be paid to removing weeds and moss in order to maintain the quality of the space.
Whether in tennis or horse riding: the current situation is forcing clubs to find innovative solutions while at the same time offering players a safe environment. It remains to be seen how the weather gods and decision-makers will respond to the challenges of drought.
