Hameln-Pyrmont remains a Fairtrade district: two years of commitment!

There is reason to be happy in the Hameln-Pyrmont district: the district was again awarded the title “Fairtrade District” on July 15, 2025. This honor is awarded by Transfair e.V. and recognizes the social commitment to fair trade throughout the district. The certificate was presented in the district hall, where the achievements of the Fairtrade steering group as well as the municipal purchasing behavior and the campaigns carried out were recognized. Radio active reports that, in addition to providing evidence of an extensive range of fairly traded goods in retail and catering, targeted campaigns are also being carried out to publicize fair trade.

The district has an active steering group that was founded in 2012. It is made up of representatives from politics, clubs, administration, schools, churches as well as from retail and gastronomy. The new head of the steering group, Hartmut Tegtmeier, is planning, among other things, a new edition of the “Fair Guide”, which will serve as a practical purchasing aid for fair retail stores and services.

Commitment to fair trade

In the Hameln-Pyrmont district, many actors are committed to fair trade. Activities such as school festivals, exhibitions, weekly markets, theater performances for young people and an exciting supermarket placement challenge are on the program. It is initiatives like these that address citizens directly and raise awareness of the issue. In over 820 Fairtrade towns in Germany, which also includes Hameln-Pyrmont, there is a trend of constant growth#5695651; like the information from Fairtrade Towns present.

In Germany, over 40 districts are now committed to fair trade and have been designated as Fairtrade districts. This development not only shows a positive trend, but also increasing cooperation between different actors. This also includes the district council resolution that Fairtrade coffee will be offered at meetings, which sends a clear signal of sustainable awareness in the administration.

Partners for a fair future

The aim of these initiatives is to ensure appropriate prices and thus contribute to fighting poverty and improving the living conditions of farmers and their families in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Fairtrade sees itself as a network that links civil society, politics and business - and not just in Hameln-Pyrmont. Similarly, the Munich district pursues the goal of promoting fair conditions throughout the region in its steering group and promoting acquisitions of Fairtrade partners in the areas of retail, catering, schools and clubs, such as Munich district reported.

The next big challenge for Hameln-Pyrmont could be to continue to make the diverse offerings attractive and to win even more citizens for fair trade. Because only together can we make a difference and advocate for fairer global trade. The district remains on the right track and shows that fair trade is successful locally - there is more that can be done!
