Hameln relies on cool heads: Controversies surrounding the new fog system

In Hameln, a new spray mist system at the powder tower is causing discussions. The city has invested around 77,000 euros in this innovative project, which is intended to offer citizens a welcome way to cool off on hot days. But not everyone is enthusiastic: the question of high costs is being raised on social media, and many feel that spending the money is unnecessary and excessive. Dewezet reports about the criticism that has already arisen in various discussion forums.

But the city administration remains calm. Press spokesman Thomas Wahmes explains that the fog system was developed specifically for Hameln and is not simply a standard product. According to Wahmes, such technology is only used in a few places in Germany. In order to make the right decision, the city sought several offers to ensure the best possible installation of the system.

Green spaces and trees as part of urban development

In addition to the fog system, the city also focused on ecological beautification: several small to medium-sized trees were planted at the Powder Tower. But there are limitations here too: press spokeswoman Wiebke Kanz emphasizes that there is no space for large-crowned trees in order to avoid visibility restrictions on traffic and historical buildings. Hidden cables and supply lines underground make planting difficult. Dewezet added that the city cannot remove a lane for new trees as long as the planned southern bypass is not implemented.

However, the measures for climate adaptation are diverse. In addition to tree planting, the city also wants to use unsealing and shading to improve the urban climate. Wahmes emphasizes that the positive response to the fog system underlines the high added value for citizens. In fact, there are already inquiries from other cities in Germany about the technology of this fog system.

Climate protection is the focus of the city of Hameln

Another important topic is the climate adaptation initiative, which is constantly being pushed forward in the city. Mayor Claudio Griese recently opened the KlimaKiste in front of the wedding house. The project aims to encourage citizens to engage in dialogue about climate adaptation measures by the end of August. Visitors can experience the positive effects of water, greenery and shade up close. Hameln.de reports about the impact this dialogue has on the community.

The new elements in the KlimaKiste are particularly striking: from July 5th to 25th, a water playground called “PlayFountain” will be offered, as well as bee-friendly plant beds, colorful furniture and play equipment. A survey of 500 citizens showed that the desire for more shade and greenery in the city center is high. The climate adaptation survey is also active again and can be completed using a QR code or the city's website.

As part of its future development strategies, the city also plans to build a six-meter-high shade element in front of the Kaiserbrunnen. The garden parties on August 8th and 15th and the documentary film “A Sky Full of Bees” are further steps to raise awareness of climate issues. As a new partner of KlimaKiste, Neudorff from Emmerthal supports the project with plants.

In conclusion, it remains to be said: Hameln has a good knack for innovative projects. The city administration shows commitment and determination, both in terms of the new fog systems and the comprehensive climate adaptation measures that should benefit the future of the city.
