The zoo is causing a stir in Hanover. With almost 2,000 animals from 166 different species, it amazes thousands of visitors every year. This is underpinned by Stefan Germann, an experienced animal care veteran who has been responsible for the animal residents for almost 25 years. He commented on his experiences in a Facebook video, especially on the occasion of the zoo's 150th birthday. One thing becomes very clear: for Germann, the zoo is not just work, but a true passion.
Which event particularly influenced him? The birth of a polar bear in 2019, a rarity that rarely occurs in the underwater world. Germann describes this moment as “particularly significant” and emphasizes his fascination with the animal world, which is both his area of work and his purpose in life. And it is the diversity of species that never ceases to amaze him.
Insights into the everyday life of animal keepers
The daily challenges for animal keepers are varied. Feeding, cleaning the enclosure and training are just some of the tasks on their agenda. Every time Germann steps into the enclosure, he knows that there will be surprises that he cannot predict. “Every day brings new experiences,” he invites viewers to experience a piece of his world and thus take a look behind the scenes of the zoo world.
He is particularly fond of seals, especially gray seals. He describes them as a “funny overall package” – no wonder they often cause smiles and amazement at the zoo. “It’s a mixture of responsibility and joy in the animal world,” says Germann, who, with his many years of experience, has a good knack for caring for his protégés.
His unwavering enthusiasm for the animal community is noticeable to everyone who knows him. During the conversation it quickly becomes clear: Hannover Zoo is a place that fascinates not only the animals, but also people and keeps the concern for nature and its creatures alive. Like a sea of flowers that has a magical effect, the love for the animals is also expressed, not only by the keepers, but also by the visitors who keep coming back to experience the diversity.
