Children in Hanover contribute to green urban design

Last weekend, 17 primary school children from the Südstadtschule planted 5,500 flower bulbs in the ground. This colorful event took place at the House of Religions and will shape the Weißekreuzplatz in Hanover. The little gardeners have planted crocuses in different colors as well as white daffodils, which will bloom next spring and will brighten up the cityscape and the children's route to school. “It was a great experience,” reported one of the children as they beamed with the others about their new planting columns.

The plants are financed through the city square program “Hannover Creates Space”, which is an important part of the redesign of the square on Böhmerstrasse. This greening measure was initiated on the occasion of the 39th German Evangelical Church Congress in 2025 and is intended to create a new meeting garden. Mayor Belit Onay, who also took part in the “City of Peace Construction Site” hands-on campaign, emphasized how important such projects are for the feeling of the city and the community.

The event was not only an example of civic engagement, but also a contribution to promoting peace. At the church conference, participants were able to carve symbols such as houses, bridges, trees and plants into sandstone under the guidance of master stonemason Andreas Textores. These motifs are intended to represent an open and peaceful city and were placed as seating in the new garden. As an additional sign of communication, the words “peace” are engraved on the ground in twelve different languages.

In view of climate protection and the touching importance of nature, it is clear that many communities are actively working to contribute to a more environmentally friendly future. The Evangelical Church is not only involved in the area of greening, but also through various projects that promote sustainability and community, such as the “climate gardens” initiative or repair cafés.

It is up to the citizens to want to further develop and maintain the communal nature. Projects like this demonstrate the great potential of collaboration between schools, cities and religious communities. There is great anticipation for the coming flowering season, and the crocuses and white daffodils will not only delight the square, but also the hearts of the people of Hanover.
